Leadership and executive coaching

What is executive coaching

Executive coaching has emerged as one of the most sought-after and important approaches to leadership development. It is the process of equipping executives with the tools, knowledge and opportunities they need to develop themselves and become more effective through one-to-one conversations with an unbiased external professional. A wide variety of behavioural techniques and an ongoing series of activities tailored to the executives’ current issues or relevant problem is designed by the executive coach to assist the executives in maintaining a consistent and confident focus as they fine-tune their strengths and manage their shortcomings. In essence, executive coaching is designed to help executives become better and more agile.

A typical executive coaching process involves chemistry session, briefing & contracting session, information gathering (through world class methodologies such as 360 feedback, job shadowing, stakeholder interviews and/or psychometric assessment), one-to-one coaching sessions as well as a debriefing session.

The entire coaching process usually lasts approximately 9 months and it may be extended as new development goals emerge.

Why executive coaching matters

Based on the study by International Coach Federation, organisations worldwide have been investing a total of more than two billion US dollars in coaching every year. Out of those organisations that are able to provide figures to calculate their return of investment from coaching, 86% indicated that they had at least made their investment back and 47% indicated that they saw a return of investment of at least 10 times the investment they have made.

In addition, surveys with business executives indicated that executive coaching offers real tangible benefits such as:

  • Accelerate promotion

  • Acquire new skill or improve on existing one

  • Improve business management

  • Increase client satisfaction

  • Improve communication skills

  • Increase diversity
